What Is Ethnicity

What are the characteristics of ethnicity?

From week 5 lecture:
Ethnicity does not have one distinct meaning like many concepts in anthropology. It includes a number of areas that contribute to its meaning such as; geographical background, religion, language, cultural traditions. Ethnicity is closely related to nationalism in that they overlap in certain areas.
The primordial view is that ethnicity has always existed however most anthopologists view would be that it is a more recent concept used from the 1950's.

From lecture on Ethnicity and Violence:

Why has ethnicity become the major form of population difference and cleavage between groups, replacing single issues like politics, religion, economics with a bundled-up collection of traits?

Why is ethnicity so successful in promoting violence between the categories of "us" and "them"?
