My essay focused on the various sociocultural problems faced by Asian immigrants settling in Britain. It addressed the way in which dramatic cultural differences make assimilation an unnatural struggle, especially regarding such religious traditions as wearing the burkha or hijab, which often generate Western opinions that are completely unlike the views of the women who are wearing them, therefore creating a conflicting and often tense relationship between the two cultures. The "melting pot" of homogenisation is gradually transforming as cultural recognition becomes highly politicised and increasingly individualistic. The essay also looked at the British-born second generation South Asians, who often found themselves "torn" between two distinct cultures, sometimes leading to hostility towards their homeland and therefore their parents, for example girls wanting independence etc., which is of course the norm in British culture.
